Martu Wangka means "Aboriginal language". It is a term often used to refer to the language spoken by the Martu 'Aborigines' in the Jigalong area of Western Australia, where the two main dialects are Manyjilyjarra and Kartujarra.
Martu Wangka is spoken by approximately 1300 people.
Translation of the Scriptures was commenced by James and Marjory Marsh of the Summer Institute of Linguistics and other Martu co-translators in the 1970s. Ken and Lesley Hansen and a group of thirty Martu co-translators altogether commenced Scripture translation in 1992. Co-translators responsible for the bulk of this translation are Kururtakurru (Len Brooks) and Namuny (Ian Taylor). Without their commitment to the task only a small amount of translation would have been available. Dr. Carl Gross (Bible Society) and Steve Swartz of SIL checked the translation for accuracy.
The following sections were translated by James Marsh and his co-translators: Genesis 1-3, Matthew 1:18-24 and 26-28, John 14:1-17, Titus.
We thank the Bible Society in Australia for publishing this volume, and subsidising 50% of the costs in producing the translation. They paid all of the Aboriginal co- translators' wages and some accommodation and travelling costs of the project. The Summer Institute of Linguistics provided previously-produced materials and gave encouragement to the project.
